WASHers is back!

Hashing isn't only about being embarassing in public, wearing seriously unflattering jogging togs and drinking too much beer - some hashers drink too much wine, as well. The Wine Appreciation Society of Hashers - "WASHers" - was founded by Wet Wipe of the Bristol Hash House Harriers, the inaugural meeting being held on Thursday 26th May, 2005 at the Clifton Sausage. A lot of wine, (including two re-launches) has been passed since then.

The last WASHers, of which there is no known record, was at Sergio's in Frogmore Street, Bristol, on Friday, 20th July, 2007.

Welcome Autumn with a glass or six of vino, vin, vinho, Wein, gwin, plonk or wine among friends and sympathisers.

Al's Tikka Grill, 33 Ashton Road, Ashton Gate, Bristol. 21/10/2005.

The fourth WASHers meeting took place on the 21st October at Al's Tikka Grill. Those present were Wet Wipe (GM), Sleepy (CM), HBK (WA), Kerb Crawler, Stiffy, Waynetta, Mad Max, and Kiwi. Apologies were received from Sweat Monster (SM) who had the flu but had enough energy to meet Duchess for a bevvy or two that evening before going home to bed. Presumably without Duchess.

Having never been inside Al's place before I was surprised at how intimate it was. The big mirror on the right hand wall certainly made it look roomier.

A variety of wines were imbibed over the course of the 2½ hours Al allowed us to remain at our table. Some very tasty food was consumed as well. The GM was heard to give her Chicken Biriani an 8½/10. Great praise indeed! The peshwari nan was yummy too. Max (I think) had a madras. Let's hope Kiwi didn't mind! The only person to have a starter was Sleepy. There weren't too many complaints about everyone else having to wait for him to finish it before getting the main courses. We did get through a fair number of popadoms with dips.

When we were evicted at 21.30 hours there was only half of a bottle of something left, so it was probably just as well we had to go. We were surprised at how little the bill was. Only £64 for eight of us. Thanks Al! We moved on to the Coronation Tap for another glass or two, although by then no one was drinking anything made from grapes.

Sleepy performed his role of CM excellently as always, getting Wet Wipe on the bus and off at the correct stop. Wet Wipe asked the bus driver to make sure Sleepy got off at the right place too as he kept falling asleep.

Generally a fine evening, if a little quiet for a WASHers with nothing "odd" happening. Unless you count being evicted of course. Shame we weren't warned that we'd only rented the table for part of the evening.

The next WASHers meeting is on Friday 25th November, at Aqua Bar and Restaurant, Welsh Back BS1 4RR.

I want it known that the next venue was a general consensus from those present at Al's, not my decision. The Itchy Bristol guide says it's like an Ikea showroom, full of suits and townies and and has trendy clientele. Well we'll fit in brilliantly then. It's also gay friendly apparently.

The World's Best Bars web site (www.worldsbestbars.com/city/bristol/aqua-bristol.htm) says,

"Considered the centrepiece of the stylish waterside scene, Aqua's ethos combines a serious dedication to good food with a nihilistic knack for knockout drinks. You'll be welcome to linger as long as you like over brunch, lunch or dinner and time in between. You may have to."

Oh well, we'll see. Meet at 19.00 hours.
